Ubuntu because it is easy to install and easy to use. To install software you can use the Synaptic manager, you click on something to install it, unclick to uninstall it.

If you install Wine you will also be able to run some Windows programs.

If you are computer savvy and would like to learn about how Linux actually works under the hood, a distro based on Debian, such as Ubuntu or MEPIS would be great.

I cut my Teeth on Linux with Ubuntu 6.10, I have tried many other Linux distros including : Mandriva, Sabayon, PCLinuxOS , Fedora, SUSE, Debian etc. but I keep going back to Ubuntu.

My preferred Ubuntu release is 7.04

However I also work with Ubuntu 7.10

I am currently testing Ubuntu 8.04 (Alpha 6), the finished product is due for release late April.

If you are looking for something to get you started with Linux then look at this awesome distro.

May I suggest a variation of Ubuntu.

The best fully loaded Linux distro with most of the software preinstalled is Linux Mint 4.0 Daryna (Main Edition). Its directly based on the immensely successful kernel of Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon.

Its easy to install and easy to use.

It also includes the awesome 3D effects of Compiz Fusion :

Enjoy Linux and be patient if you don’t immediately understand something as there is massive amounts of online support. Most of this advice would also apply to Linux Mint as it is based on the Ubuntu kernel.

    Good luck
